WakeMate’s quest to help you kiss your groggy mornings goodbye continues. The Y Combinator-funded startup has become something of a poster child for the mantra “Hardware is hard” — when the company debuted its gadget in November, it promised to start shipping devices the following January. That didn’t happen, and the company didn’t have a concrete date for when the first batch might ship. A few units shipped in April, but the company wouldn’t say how many, so it probably wasn’t a very encouraging figure. Now, it looks like there may finally be a light at the end of the tunnel.

See the bullet for HP's new D110a Photosmart e-All-in-One that says, "HP ePrint for printing anywhere." Well, you can ignore that for now. While HP proudly lists ePrint -- the ability to print PDF, JPEG, and MS Office documents received as attachments from any email-capable device -- as a flagship feature on its newest line of web-connected printers, it's not a working feature and it won't be until a software update is pushed out at the end of the month, according to support forums. Unfortunately, there's no notice of this on HP's own retail listing for the D110a (HP's first ePrint-capable printer), Amazon, or in brick-and-mortar shops like Best Buy. As soon as everyone got to actually see the unreleased Google Desktop application in action, they wanted to have it.
The only problem is this isn’t just about waiting until Google finishes it off and ships it. There’s a real possibility that Google will never release a Skype-like soft phone for the desktop – they clearly want to build these types of applications in the browser. But the experts we’ve spoken with, including Skype execs, say browser technology just isn’t ready to run high quality VoIP calls at scale. Four short months after Opera 10.5, the Scandanavian potato boilers are back for more -- the latest version of their lightweight web browser features not only claims to be the fastest, but the first final browser with WebM video support. While we actually noticed a variety of web videos felt choppy with the Windows version, there's no denying it's a speedy little hummingbird; Engadget felt snappier on Opera than Chrome or Firefox by far.
