We’ve just learned at D8 today that Dell will be offering the Streak to US customers direct from its website — unlocked — starting next month for $500. That’s later than the June 4 date that UK customers will be enjoying, but it’s earlier than it could’ve been — Dell had merely been giving “later this Summer” guidance previously. We’re not exactly sure what to make of this, but during this morning’s press conference on the new Core i3, i5 and i7 ULV processors , Intel’s Mooly Eden seemed to reveal that Chipzilla is planning to launch a special “tablet solution” at Computex. No details were given on this “dedicated silicon for the tablet space, ” but we can assume that it’s going to fall into the Atom line up. Whether it will be an extension of the Moorestown family or just be an outgrowth of the Pineview platform found in netbooks and nettops remains to be seen, but you can bet on us listening up for more info when we’re live from Taipei next week. Let’s just be nice and feign surprise , okay? Good. With that out of the way, Microsoft has announced a 64GB version of Zune HD, due out April 12th via the Zune online store (and later via other retailers) with a handful of color options and a strapping $349.99 price tag. Not to be outdone, the 16GB and 32GB will each receive a $20 cut on the MSRP, to $200 and $270, respectively — whatever Amazon and Newegg slash beyond that is up to them. It seems “as soon as possible” is the motto for when the price drop is taking place, so if your favorite online / brick-and-mortar retailer isn’t yet honoring the extra Andrew Jackson in your pocket, have patience. So now we’re left with a v4.5 firmware release date as the remaining piece in this puzzle, but Microsoft promises to solve that riddle wrapped in an enigma “in the coming days.” Right. Hear that, kids? Tony Melone — Verizon Wireless’ Senior VP and CTO — confirmed to us during a one-on-one meeting after the company’s CTIA roundtable discussion that every last one of its data-only LTE WWAN devices (aircards, MiFi-type products and USB data sticks, for example) would also support 3G. Not too surprising given the natural ties between the two technologies, but it’s still refreshing to hear that every 4G data-only product that launches (at least initially) on VZW will also be able to hop onto the company’s 3G network if you just so happen to break away from an LTE area. Can’t say that for a smattering of existing WiMAX products. In related news, Tony also affirmed that Verizon would be “interested” in getting a smartphone on its LTE network that could double as a mobile hotspot, exactly how the Palm Pre Plus does now (but on 3G, obviously). As for pricing when it comes to LTE data rates? Tony wouldn’t give us any indication of the carrier’s plans, but if it’s anything similar to whispers we’ve heard in the past (not to mention rates already seen through Clearwire ), it’ll probably be at least marginally more expensive than what you’re paying today for third-generation access. Well, it looks like those initial rumblings about a big shake-up at Segway were right on the mark, as Segway Inc. has now come out and confirmed that it has been acquired by a UK-based firm backed by Hesco Bastion Chairman and Segway UK investor Jimi Heselden (previously reported to be JWH Holdings). Not surprisingly, it isn’t offering much in the way of details, but it did say that it has also received funding that will “support the continued growth of the company.” Head on past the break for the complete statement.
